According to a 2009 article by Peter Crosta in Medical News Today, cellulite is the common term for the fat deposits directly under the skin that result in the dimpled appearance of the skin. Cellulite generally appears on most people on the legs or in the abdominal area, as these regions typically store a greater percentage of fat than other areas of the body. Crosta also states that cellulite can be caused by diets high in fat and carbohydrates, low fiber intake, and by a sedentary or inactive lifestyle. Losing weight by incorporating physical exercise into your daily routine, adding fiber to your diet, and increasing your intake of fruits and vegetables could help you in terms of losing unwanted pounds and can help to diminish the appearance of cellulite.

Step 1

Incorporate at least 20 minutes of moderate physical activity into your schedule, at least five days per week. Examples of moderate physical activity include walking the dog, riding a bike with your children, taking the stairs at work, or house cleaning activities such as vacuuming or sweeping.

Step 2

Increase your fiber intake by substituting white bread and pastas for whole grain bread and pasta or brown rice. Adding fiber to your diet helps you feel full for a longer period of time, which results in fewer calories eaten and weight loss. The Health Guide claims that fiber works to increase circulation and improve the appearance of skin from the inside out, helping to diminish cellulite.

Step 3

Increase your fruit and vegetable intake by striving to eat at least two servings of fruit and three servings of vegetables every day. A healthy diet high in fruits and vegetables aids in weight loss and the maintenance of a healthy weight and works to lose and prevent cellulite.

Step 4

Avoid very tight or restrictive clothing in the lower limbs. Crosta claims that the tight elastic found in undergarments could possibly lead to the formation of cellulite. He recommends wearing "boyshorts" or less restrictive clothing to help keep the circulation in your lower limbs to prevent cellulite.

Tips and Warnings

  • Many stress-reducing activities are also helpful in weight loss, and could also contribute to the reduction of cellulite. Incorporating deep breathing exercises, visualization techniques, or monthly massages could be helpful in terms of losing those last few pounds.
