The turkey may be the official mascot of Thanksgiving, but if you're a woman of a certain age, having a "turkey neck" is nothing to be thankful for. The term turkey neck usually applies to the loose, saggy skin in the neck and chin area. Also called a turkey wattle, this loose skin can be related to aging, sun exposure, weight loss or genetics. However, you might not need to buy a full supply of turtlenecks just yet--you can take some proactive steps that may prevent the dreaded turkey neck from affecting you.
Sunscreen
Sun exposure and sun damage are among the main culprits for skin aging of the neck, and this includes turkey neck, reports Channel 4.com. Never forget your neck when applying sunscreen, and do so regardless of the season. Channel 4.com suggests applying SPF 15 sunscreen on your neck whenever you go outside. If you have short hair, you should apply sunscreen to the back and sides of your neck as well. If you still feel as though your neck is overexposed, you can wear a wide-brimmed hat.
Retinoid Cream
According to plastic surgeon Alan Matarasso in Oprah.com, using creams containing retinoids can help boost collagen and elastic production in your neck area, strengthening the skin and preventing sagging. Ideally, the use of creams for preventative purposes should begin early, reports Channel 4.com. If you begin a skin care regimen for your neck when you're in your 20s, it will become second nature by the time you're older. Channel 4.com also recommends an occasional exfoliation treatment or mask for your neck skin.
Facial Exercises
Doing face and neck exercises can also help tone the skin around your neck, keeping it firm and supple. Channel 4.com suggests an exercise in which you tilt your head back so you're looking at the ceiling, and then do a chewing movement with your jaw while keeping your lips closed. This exercise should be repeated 20 times. Another approach is to look up at the ceiling and pucker your lips in a simulated kiss. Hold this pose for the count of ten, relax, then repeat five times. With both of these exercises, you'll feel your neck muscles being engaged.
Weight Control
According to Channel 4.com, dramatic weight fluctuations in either direction can have unfortunate consequences for an aging woman's neck. Dramatic weight loss can leave you with loose neck skin, while weight gain can cause an unsightly double-chin. Try to maintain a healthy, consistent weight as you age, keeping in mind that weight changes can effect all areas of your body.
