Dark circles and bags under your eyes can make you appear older and tired, regardless of if you are or not. These occurrences can be due to a lack of sleep, water retention, allergies or genetic predisposition. Artful makeup techniques can both reduce swelling and the severe appearance of dark circles. Take caution when applying makeup to this area, however, as the skin tends to be very thin and can be easily cut or damaged.
Step 1
Dab a firming eye cream underneath the eyes in order to cause the skin to tighten, according to "Real Simple." Use your ring finger for application, which has less strength than your dominant index finger and minimizes damage to the skin, according to "The Fit Map." The cream also provides a smooth surface for you to apply makeup, which makes for a more even application and can reduce the likelihood that concealer will collect in the skin folds under the eyes.
Step 2
Apply a shimmering or light-reflecting cream to the area under the eyes, according to "Marie Claire." Because puffy eyes can create a shadow effect underneath your eye, the light-reflecting cream can reduce the darkened appearance. Be sure to use a cream that does not contain visible flecks of glitter, which can irritate the eye.
Step 3
Use a makeup brush or finger to apply a yellow-undertoned concealer underneath the eyes, according to "Real Simple." The yellow will help to reduce the noticeability of the purple. Begin at the corner of the eye closest to the bridge of the nose. This is the area where you will want to apply the most concealer because it tends to be the darkest. Slowly fan out the concealer toward the opposite edge of your eye.
Step 4
Using a powder puff or brush, apply loose powder to the area underneath the eye where you have just applied concealer. Because concealers are often cream or liquid-based, the powder helps to set the makeup in place, which can reduce the likelihood that it will fade over time.
Tips and Warnings
- Using a concealer brush may help to ensure a more even application, according to "The Fit Map." This brush features small, firm bristles to apply concealer and can be purchased at most drugstores or makeup supply stores.
