Sticking to a diet can represent challenges for many people. Weight loss diets in particular often feature a significant reduction in food intake that may be hard to stick to. A number of natural compounds can help reduce appetite without inducing the side effects associated with stimulants. Always consult a health care professional before beginning any herbal therapies.

Green Tea

One of the world's favourite beverages, green tea can help facilitate weight loss in a number of ways. David Tolson, a nutritional researcher and a contributor to Bulk Nutrition, reports that the catechin content within the tea can increase the rate of thermogenesis in the body. In addition, these compounds also show the ability to suppress appetite through by increasing noradrenaline and cholecystokinin. Tolson notes that although green tea contains caffeine, it exerts a relaxing effect on users due to the concentration of theanine, an amino acid that calms the brain.

5-HTP

Your body naturally produces five hydroxytryptophan, more commonly referred to as 5-HTP, from components in food. An amino acid, the body forms it from it's precursor tryptophan, which is present in many foods and especially so in poultry and grains. Once inside the brain, 5-HTP converts into serotonin, a neurotransmitter associated with calm feelings and satisfaction. Dr. Robert Erdmann, the author of The Amino Acid Revolution, explains how boosting serotonin levels can curb binge-eating and excessive food cravings.

PI2 Proteinase Inhibitors

Whenever you consume a meal, the body releases a hormone called CCK, or cholecystokinin, from the intestines. This hormone communicates to the brain that food has arrived and hunger signals quickly dissipate. PI2 proteinase inhibitors, extracted from white potatoes, increase the release of CCK, increasing feelings of fullness following eating and making it easier to avoid overindulgence. A news release on Weight Loss Center website suggests that the use of PI2 may be helpful in enhancing the success of weight loss diets.
