A stuffy nose or nasal congestion occurs when the skin tissue and blood vessels lining the nose become inflamed. Congestion can be caused by the common cold, flu or seasonal allergies. The typical length for congestion is one week. Nasal congestion is considered an emergency only in infants, because infants use only their nose to breathe. Medical attention is required if an infant is experiencing congestion. However, congestion in older children and adults is not as severe. A variety of home remedies may relieve symptoms using items found right in your kitchen cabinets.
Humidifier
Run a humidifier in the bedroom when sleeping. Take a hot shower for 15 minutes if a humidifier is not available. The steam from the shower will ease breathing and nasal passageways.
Steam Your Face
Boil several cups of water. Add 2 tsp. of salt. Place bowl on table and place head over bowl. Cover head with a towel. Steam the face and breathe in vapors to clear congestion. Add peppermint oil or lavender oil for aromatherapy.
Fluids
Increase fluid intake. Water and sports drinks are recommended. Clear soups such as chicken soup and broth are also beneficial. Drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day.
Positioning Yourself in Bed
Avoid lying down flat. Prop yourself upright by using several pillows in bed. An upright position will allow mucus to drain freely from the nasal passageways.
Vinegar
Heat up a cup of apple cider vinegar. Breathe in the vapors to decrease congestion. The aroma of eucalyptus or peppermint oil is also a good source to relieve congestion. Place the oil on a tissue. Breath in the aroma as needed to clear the nose.
Saline Drops
Use saline drops or sprays in the nose. The medication can be purchased over-the-counter at most drug and pharmacy stores. Inhale drops of saline solution into the nose as needed to decrease mucus and runny nose.
