With so many ideas, themes and accessories available, deciding how to decorate your baby boy's room can be challenging. When planning the nursery décor, choose basics such as paint color and furniture that will transition easily into the toddler years. While Noah's Ark or ABC Blocks wallpaper may look adorable in your son's nursery, he may quickly outgrow it, resulting in the need for a complete makeover. Select a theme that will remain age appropriate for a few years or incorporate the theme with accessories that can simply be removed or changed.
Step 1
Decide if you want your décor to be based on a specific theme or if you would prefer to decorate according to colors and textures. Some theme ideas for a baby boy's room include jungle animals, bugs, cars and trucks, sea creatures, sports and puppies. Shop around for bedding, window treatments and accessories that work with your theme, as these items will determine your choice of paint colors.
Step 2
Decide on a color scheme. While blue is considered traditional for boys, some contemporary choices include varying shades of green, yellow, brown or orange. Paint the walls and trim in colors that complement your bedding and window treatments.
Step 3
Determine furniture arrangement. Consider the amount of space available and prioritize according to the most necessary items. Find a place for the crib, changing table and dresser for baby's clothes.
While a rocker will get much use in the nursery as well, it can also be placed in another room if space is limited. Try to place the crib along the main wall to create a visual focal point. Position the changing table nearby for functionality.
Step 4
Add wall decorations. Wall stickers are easy to apply and remove, which make them a good choice for incorporating a theme. Place these stickers on walls, closet doors and even on dressers and changing table. These can later be peeled off and removed or reapplied when making changes to the room.
Frame your son's hand and foot prints to hang in the room for a personal touch. Purchase large, unfinished wood letters that spell out your son's name from the craft store. Paint them in the color that matches either the room's trim or the finish on the crib. Arrange them in the right order and hang them above the crib.
Step 5
Add wall shelves and bookshelves to the room. Fill with decorative baby boy items such as a blue teddy bear, blue piggy bank and other accessory pieces that fit in with the boy theme.
Step 6
Purchase a child-sized, unfinished, wooden rocking chair, toy chest or storage bench. Paint this to match the room's color scheme. Use stencils to add your son's name and date of birth to the piece. This will make a keepsake accent piece for the nursery that will become functional as he grows from baby to preschooler.
Step 7
Choose an area rug that matches the walls or bedding. Place it on the floor in front of the crib to carry the theme color down to the floor.
