When you get an outbreak of pimples, also known as acne, you probably want to get rid of it as soon as possible. Although pimples will eventually go away without treatment, individuals with severe acne may experience new pimples almost every day. To get rid of pimples more quickly and prevent new pimples from popping up, use an over-the-counter treatment and home remedies to help stop the breakouts. For particularly severe cases, consider prescription medications.
Step 1
Wash the afflicted skin twice a day with an over-the-counter acne wash that contains either benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, according to MayoClinic.com in the article "Acne." Benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid will help reduce oil on the skin and encourage skin exfoliation to get rid of pimples faster and prevent new breakouts from occurring.
Step 2
Leave pimples alone instead of picking or squeezing them. Although squeezing the pimple may remove some pus, it may also spread bacteria across the skin, causing infection.
Step 3
Pull long hair back with a hair tie. If your hair is constantly brushing past your face, the oils in your hair may be making your acne worse. By removing the source of the oil, you can encourage your acne to heal faster.
Step 4
Use only one acne medication at a time, says Thomas Gossel, Ph.D., R.Ph., a professor of pharmacology and toxicology at Ohio Northern University in The Doctors Book of Home Remedies. Mixing acne medications may make acne worse and prevent it from healing.
Step 5
Get a cortisone shot to remove a cystic pimple quickly. Cystic acne may feel like a hard, swollen lump and may be difficult to remove. To minimize cystic acne quickly, consult your dermatologist for a cortisone injection, which may be effective within several days.
