Alternative Cures for Bone Spurs

A bone spur is growth on a bone caused by calcium deposits. They occur around the tendons and ligaments that attach to the bone, and are typically found in the hip, shoulder, heel, elbows, wrists or back. These spurs often result from repeated stress to a certain area, like heavy lifting, jumping, running or sprinting. They can also be caused by osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, poor circulation and other degenerative diseases. Bone spurs can be quite painful, so it's important to detect them early. In addition to medicinal remedies, there are alternative methods to cure them or relieve the pain.

Hot and Cold Therapy

If the spur is in your foot or heel, alternating between hot and cold foot baths can help relieve inflammation and loosen the tendons. Ice massages to the affected area can also help. Apply an ice pack directly to the area for 10 to 15 minutes several times a day.

Stretching and Yoga

Stretching is important to loosen up the tendons surrounding the bone spur. Spurs can be caused by tight muscles which pull on the tendons. Practice yoga or stretch the surrounding area two to three times a day for 10 minutes.

Massage Therapy

Sports massage therapists can be very helpful in relieving pain caused by spurs. They can identify what tendons are tight and help to loosen those to relieve the pressure from the bone. They can also break up adhesions and scar tissue that can cause tightness.

Hot Linseed Oil

Warm linseed oil can soothe and relieve pain. Saturate a cloth in it and apply to the affected area with a heating pad to keep it warm. Keep the pack in place for 60 minutes.

Herbal Baths

Arnica and chamomile added to a warm bath can help relieve pain and inflammation. You can also wrap the herbs in a warm cloth and apply as necessary.

Calcium and Magnesium Supplements

A proper balance of these nutrients prevents calcium deposits from forming in the body. You can also take these with a digestive enzyme like betaine HCI to help the body absorb these minerals.

Natural Anti-Inflammatories

Natural ingredients found in aloe vera juice, glucosamine, evening primrose oil, shark cartilage and kelp can help relieve pain and inflammation.
