How to Make a Sled Go Faster

Sledding is a fun winter activity, enjoyed by children and many adults. Sleds can be made of wood, but most modern sleds are made of plastic and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Flying down a hill with the cold winter air in your face creates fond childhood memories, and the desire to make your sled go faster is shared by most. Following some basic sledding tips will help add speed to your sled in time for your next run down the hill.

Step 1

Clean underneath the sled with a damp cloth or rag to remove any loose dirt or debris. Also, run some fine sandpaper along the bottom to remove any bumps or burrs that have formed and smooth the surface.

Step 2

Rub candle wax or standard ski wax on the underside of the sled to make it slide down the hill faster. Spray the bottom with cooking spray or other spray lubricant if you do not have access to wax.

Step 3

Build one or more snow ramps on the hill to accelerate your speed as you slide down. Pack the snow down tight and go over it slowly with the sled the first few times to make it hard.

Step 4

Shift the bulk of your weight and any passenger's weight to the front of the sled before you start down the hill. Weight in the front will make it difficult for the rear of the sled to bog down as it travels down the hill.
