Rhinitis is inflammation of the inner lining of the nose. It can be characterized by an itchy or runny nose, post-nasal drip and nasal congestion. Chromic rhinitis occurs consistently.

Vasomotor rhinitis can be caused by reaction to temperatures or irritants such as air pollution, cigarette smoke and perfume. Gustatory rhinitis comes from eating hot or spicy food. Non-allergic rhinitis with nasal eosinophilia syndrome (NARES) has a clear nasal discharge.
The Mayo Clinic says non-allergic rhinitis symptoms can occur all year.
According to the American Academy of Otolaryngology, allergic rhinitis is caused by a reaction to allergens such as pollen dust and pet dander. Allergic rhinitis is also known as hay fever.
Runny Nose
A runny nose is also called rhinorrhea. In allergic rhinitis, a runny nose can be accompanied by itchy, watery eyes and sneezing. A runny nose is characterized by a discharge of fluid from the nostrils.
Nasal Congestion
Nasal congestion is a blockage of nasal passages. It occurs as a result of inflamed or irritated nasal tissues. Nasal congestion can be present with a runny nose. The Mayo Clinic says nasal congestion can be dangerous for infants because it may interfere with breathing or nursing.
Post -asal Drip
According to MedicineNet.com, post-nasal drip is "mucus accumulation in the back of the nose and throat leading to, or giving the sensation of, mucus dripping downward from the back of the nose." Post-nasal drip could lead to sore throats or a cough. Post-nasal drip can be caused by extra mucous secretions or problems with mucus removal.
Rhinosinusitis
The American Academy of Otolaryngology says there is a relationship between rhinitis and sinusitis. Frequent rhinitis and bacterial colonization can lead to inflammation of the sinuses.
