Due to the strict regulations and punishments involving skateboarding on private property, skateboarders have turned to do-it-yourself projects to avoid confrontations with their local law enforcement agencies. Constructing ramps and rails remains a common pastime for the do it yourself skateboarder who wishes to skate in peace. Skaters often have trouble constructing homemade rails due to the fact most rails have a metal construction that requires welding. However, skateboarders can create wooden rails that work just as well by only using a few pieces of scrap wood.

Step 1

Measure your pieces of scrap 2-by-4 and 4-by-4 to determine the possible dimensions for your scrap skateboarding rail. Place the longest piece of 2-by-4 you acquired to the side for later use. Measure two equal pieces of the scrap 4-by-4 lumber that have a length of around 8 inches.

Step 2

Measure two more identical pieces of 4-by-4 with a length 2 inches shorter than the first two pieces. Cut the two equal pieces that have a length of around 8 inches with the jigsaw and place them to the side. Cut the pieces that have the 2-inch shorter length and place them with the first two pieces.

Step 3

Lay the longest piece of 2-by-4 that you could find flat on the ground. Spread the two shorter pieces of 4-by-4 to correspond with the length of your longest piece of 2-by-4. Lower the 2-by-4 piece onto the top of the two 4-by-4 pieces to act as two of the legs for the rail. Hammer three nails through the top of the 2-by-4 and into each of the 4-by-4 legs.

Step 4

Place the two taller pieces of the 4-by-4 under the 2-by-4 to act as the third and fourth supportive leg for your scrap skateboard rail. Spread the taller 4-by-4 pieces apart so each of the four legs of the scrap skateboard rail has an equal distance between it. Hammer three nails through the top of the 2-by-4 and into the third and fourth leg to secure them to the rail.

Step 5

Flip the rail upside down to sit on the 2-by-4 with the four legs pointing up vertically. Measure two pieces of scrap 2-by-4 to have an equal length of around 6 inches. Cut out the two pieces with the jigsaw. Place one of the 2-by-4 pieces on top of each of the shorter 4-by-4s to create two T-shaped legs. Hammer the 2-by-4 pieces in place with two nails in each leg.

Step 6

Flip the rail over to sit on its four legs. Rub the candle on top of the long piece of 2-by-4 running down the length of the scrap skateboard rail. Slide your board across the top of the rail to see if it has a smooth surface. Apply more candle wax if necessary.
