A swollen eye can be caused by a number of things, including infection, inflammation of the blood vessels or a knock to the eye. The symptoms of a swollen eye are puffiness around the area, redness, pain and itchiness, and/or watery discharge. Home remedies can help to reduce these symptoms and ease discomfort, but you should always see a doctor first for advice on the best treatment plan for your condition.

Salt Bath

If you don't have an eye bath, use a shot glass or egg cup. Just make sure the edges are smooth rather than sharp to avoid discomfort when it is pressed against your skin. Dilute 1 tsp. of table salt in a pint of warm water, stirring thoroughly. Scoop some of the water into your eye bath then lean forward and place your infected eye against the bath. Holding it firmly in position, quickly tilt your head back and blink several times to flush the water around your eye.

Cold Tea Compress

A cold compress of tea can help to relieve the pain and puffiness associated with some eye conditions. According to the Remedy Guidance website, ordinary Indian, camomile or red raspberry tea bags are particularly soothing. Place the tea bags in cold water then chill them in the fridge before placing them over your closed eyes. Lie in a relaxed position for up to 10 minutes.

Warm Compress

While some people get relief from cold compresses, such as the one described above, others find warmth is more soothing on a swollen eyelid. Dip a towel or cotton pad in warm water and place gently over your eyes and rest for at least 10 minutes, suggests the Home Remedies website. The warmth will cause the blood vessels in your eye to expand, encouraging the flow of nutrient-rich blood to the affected area and carrying more toxins away. To avoid further infection, it is important to use a separate towel or pad for each eye.
