When kids are in school, it falls upon parents to make school lunches that kids will eat rather than throw away. While some kids happily eat the hot meals available on campus, many families choose to send children to school with homemade meals. Rather than making a typical school lunch with a boring sandwich, try some creative school lunch ideas to add variety to your child's lunchtime routine.

Sandwich on a Stick

Take a break from the traditional school lunch by putting the ingredients of a sandwich on a stick. Cut the bread, cheese and lunch meat into cubes and slide onto a skewer. Add other foods that your child likes to the skewer, such as pickles, tomatoes, olives or lettuce, the FamilyFun website suggests. Provide a side of mustard for dipping.

Sausage Rolls

Use miniature smoked sausages or frankfurters and refrigerated roll dough to make a sandwich substitute for your child's school lunch. Separate the refrigerated dough into rounds and place one miniature sausage on each piece of dough. Pull the sides of dough up around the sausage and pinch in the center to seal the dough together. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes in a preheated 450-degree oven. Wrap individually in tin foil or place a few in an airtight container to add to your child's lunchbox. Serve with a side of ketchup or mustard for dipping. If you make the sausage rolls the night before, refrigerate overnight and add to your child's lunch in the morning.

Banana Dog

This school lunch idea from the Kaboose website combines the flavors of bananas and peanut butter with jelly and a hot dog bun. Spread peanut butter on one side of a hot dog bun and jelly on the other side of the bun. Wrap the bun in plastic wrap and add to your child's lunchbox. Also include a banana that your child can peel and place inside the bun, between the peanut butter and jelly. Give your child toppings such as raisins or shredded coconut to make the banana dog complete. If your child has a peanut allergy, substitute cream cheese for the peanut butter; if your child dislikes jelly, substitute honey.

Deviled Egg Salad Sandwich

Hard-boil four eggs, peel and remove the yolks. Chop the whites into small pieces and set aside. Mix the yolks with 4 tbsp. mayonnaise, 1 tsp. mustard and 1/2 tsp. paprika until mixture is smooth. Fold the chopped egg whites into the yolk mixture and spread onto bread or a tortilla. Roll the bread or tortilla to turn this sandwich into a deviled egg salad roll. Add a cereal mix, tomatoes and grapes to finish this school lunch.
