Around one-third of the adult population of the United States is considered clinically obese, and two-thirds of adults are overweight. According to the World health Organization, there are over one billion overweight people in the world as of 2010. Although numerous diets and commercially available weight-loss systems can help you drop unwanted pounds, sometimes it is the simple tips that keep you motivated mentally and help you to reach your goal. Consult your doctor before beginning any new diet or exercise regimen.

Mindful Eating

In her book "The Beck Diet Solution," Judith Beck writes that the most important change you can make to meet your weight-loss target is to eat "mindfully." Mindless eating is when we eat while watching TV, listen to the radio or catch up on emails --- in other words, when we perform a second activity that will distract us from the act of eating. When eating mindlessly, we are more likely to continue eating after we are full, and we often feel hungry again soon after the previous meal because we did not fully savor the eating experience, and feel something is "missing."

Beck recommends not putting a single morsel of food into your mouth unless you are sitting down and have first put the food on a plate. Before eating, turn off the TV, stop working, put your book down and break the habit of eating while you drive.

Positive Focus

Writing for the Mayo Clinic, Dr. Donald Hensrud explains that, when following a diet, a positive attitude is key to success. Hensrud says many people view a diet as a negative experience they must endure, rather than looking at it positively, as a lifestyle change that will produce numerous benefits. When you begin your diet, make a plan to stop in your tracks whenever you find yourself focusing on what you "can't have." Turn your thoughts instead to all the delightful healthy fruits and vegetables you can eat in abundance.

Look on your diet as an adventure that will open up many new avenues of culinary delights and health benefits, rather than a chore, and you will be well on your way to success.

Fat Burning Foods

In her book "Flat Belly Diet," author Liz Vaccariello recommends consuming a small portion of monounsaturated fats at each meal. Vaccariello says a diet rich in monounsaturated fatty acids will prevent fats from accumulating around the mid-torso. Foods rich in monounsaturated fats include avocados, olives, nuts, seeds and dark chocolate.

Exercise

In order to burn fat and lose weight, you must expend more calories each day than you consume. To achieve this, you need to eat less and exercise more. If you have trouble staying sufficiently motivated to exercise, you might be setting your goals too high. Start very slowly, and write down a daily exercise goal. When you meet the goal, mark it with a big check mark, then write a similar goal that is only very slightly more demanding than the previous entry. Keep a written record of your progress and give yourself a reward when you pass important personal milestones.
