Diets to lose weight easily all share a common trait: they are extremely low in calories. Long-term weight loss can be achieved with modest reductions in calorie intake, but to drop the pounds fast, you need to cut calories. The following diets do just that, and can help you lose weight easily and feel motivated to continue a healthy eating plan. Because they are highly restrictive, you should consult your doctor before starting an easy weight loss diet.

Cabbage Soup diet

According to the Cabbage Soup Diet site, you can lose up to 10 pounds in a week. The principle food of the diet is vegetable-rich cabbage soup, which includes tomatoes, peppers, onions and celery. This combination of ingredients makes it low-calorie and high in vitamins. You are also allowed selected other fruits and vegetables, on alternate days, and even steak, as part of the plan. It is still extremely low-calorie, however, so you should only do it for a week at most.

Atkins diet

Created by Dr. Robert Atkins in the 1970s, the Atkins diet remains popular because it promises to help shed weight quickly by cutting out carbohydrates. The first stage of the diet cuts carbohydrates to just 20 grams per day. According to "Living the Low Carb Life" this cuts your body's insulin production and prompts it to burn stored fat. After the first quick burst of weight loss, you will gradually reintroduce more carbs to your diet. Weight loss will continue slowly until you reach your weight loss goal.

Grapefruit diet

The Grapefruit diet was devised in 1930, according to the Grapefruit Diet website, and it owes its longevity to the promise of rapid weight loss of up to 10 pounds in 12 days. The core premise of the diet is that grapefruit has fat-burning enzymes which kick-start weight loss. Dieters eat half a grapefruit before every meal, and stick to a list of recommended foods including broccoli, spinach and pasta, according to the Grapefruit Diet site. They should also avoid foods such as bread, peas and potatoes.

Russian Air Force diet

The Russian Air Force diet is a strict, low-calorie eating plan based on Spartan military rations, according to "Quick Weight Loss Diet Plans." For breakfast, you are allowed coffee plus toast or crackers. Lunch can include a green salad and meat, and dinner might be fruit salad and yogurt, or eggs and carrot. There is little variety or flavor, but the mix of protein from eggs, meat and yogurt, plus vitamins from fruit and vegetable, provides nutrition with very few calories.
