Lemon juice has medicinal properties and is used as a diuretic, fever reducer, scurvy preventative or treatment and as an astringent, according to New Crops and Plant Products at Purdue University. Lemon juice contains citric acid that helps to exfoliate the skin by reducing or removing dead skin cells, thereby reducing scarring. In addition, lemon juice is a fruit that falls into the alpha hydroxyl acid group and commonly used in skin care products and chemical peels. Before applying lemon juice on your scars, consult with your health care professional to discuss any potential risks.
Step 1
Wash the skin area with mild soap and water to remove dirt and oil buildup. Dry with a towel.
Step 2
Pour or squeeze a small amount of lemon juice in a bowl.
Step 3
Dip the cotton in the lemon juice and apply it directly to the scar area. Leave for approximately 10 minutes. The lemon juice will become dry, similar to a mask.
Step 4
Rinse the lemon juice off your skin using water. Dry the skin area with a towel.
Step 5
Apply a moisturizer. Lemon juice may cause your skin to have a dry appearance and applying a lotion or moisturizer will help to rehydrate your skin.
Tips and Warnings
- Skin areas treated with lemon juice may become photosensitive. Applying sunscreen before sun exposure is advisable. Lemon juice may cause a slight red appearance in the skin. If the skin area becomes inflamed or irritated, wash off immediately and seek medical treatment if the symptoms do not subside.
- Avoid application near the eyes. Lemon juice will cause the eyes to sting. If this occurs, flush the eyes immediately with water and seek immediate medical attention if the stinging does not subside.
