Spending too much time in the hot sun can quickly burn and dry out unprotected skin. Your lips are covered with a thin skin membrane that can burn and peel along with other exposed areas. When preparing home remedies for lips that have been sunburned, look for treatments that soothe, moisturize and heal. Take an over-the-counter pain reliever to ease the pain. The key to lip care is to keep the area moist at all times.

Step 1

Place one cup of fresh lettuce leaves in a bowl with two cups of water. Microwave on high four minutes, or until water begins to boil. Drain the lettuce in a strainer. Wet a cotton ball with the strained lettuce liquid and apply gently to sunburned lips.

Step 2

Dip sliced fresh cucumber into a bowl of honey. Pat your lips with the honey and cucumber. Hold the cucumber between your lips to soothe and cool the sunburn.

Step 3

Remove a leaf from a fresh aloe vera plant. Slice the leaf open with a paring knife. Apply the aloe directly to your sunburned lips.

Step 4

Apply cold compresses to your lips if they have not cracked or blistered. If the skin is broken, apply dry gauze bandages to fend off infection.

Tips and Warnings

  • Try taking a pain reliever as soon as you realize you have sunburned lips, even if you don't feel the burn yet. This gives the pain reliever a chance to get into your system before the worst of the pain arrives.
  • Always contact a health care professional if your sunburned lips are accompanied by fever, chills, nausea or extreme thirst.
