When you purchase a new baseball glove for yourself or a youngster, you are not usually going to take that glove out to the baseball field right away and use it in a game. That's because the leather in the glove is stiff and you need to break it in properly before you use it in game competition. Breaking in the glove usually takes one or two days, and it will leave the leather soft and pliable.

Step 1

Squirt shaving cream in the pocket of the glove and spread it throughout the finger tips. Massage the shaving cream in until it works its way throughout the glove, softening the glove and making it easier to move the fingers.

Step 2

Take a baseball and place it in the pocket of the glove. Close the glove and fold the fingers of the glove inside the thumb. Take a rope or cloth strips and tie them firmly around the glove to keep it closed. Keep it in this position for at least two hours.

Step 3

Unfurl the glove and take the baseball out of the pocket. Squirt glove oil in the pocket and massage it in to further loosen it and make it ready for game use. Once all the oil is worked in, take a dry towel and soak up the excess oil.

Step 4

Go outside with a friend, neighbor or teammate and play catch for about 10 to 15 minutes. Try to play catch with someone who can throw hard. After you have used shaving cream and oil, playing catch will prepare the glove for game action.

Things You'll Need
