Home Remedy Advice for Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are a painful swelling and irritation of veins in and around the rectal area. Also known as piles, the temporarily distended veins have a variety of causes, including pregnancy, strain while having a bowel movement and frequent diarrhea. Hemorrhoids are a normal disorder, and by the age of 50 over half the population has experienced hemorrhoids at some time in their life, according to Mayo Clinic. Symptoms are only temporary, and include itching, bleeding and discomfort of the rectum. A variety of home remedies and treatments can decrease symptoms and help find relief for hemorrhoids.

Step 1

Wash the area daily with warm soap and water. Towel dry by patting the skin with a clean towel or use a hairdryer. Increased moisture will add to the discomfort and irritation.

Step 2

Soak in a warm bath. A five- to 10-minute soak will help relieve the hemorrhoids. Soak in the tub several times a day for added relief.

Step 3

Do not wipe with dry toilet paper. Use a wet compress, or dampen the paper with warm water. Avoid toilet paper that contains perfumes or dyes.

Step 4

Apply witch hazel with a cotton ball to the rectum. The astringent will shrink and compress hemorrhoids.

Step 5

Avoid getting hemorrhoids again by eating foods high in fiber. Include raspberries, baked beans and split peas in your diet---all high fiber foods. Drink an ample amount of water to keep stools soft and easy to pass.
