The Master Cleanse Diet is intended to detoxify the body by restricting dietary intake to purified water, salt water, laxatives, herbal tea and six to 12 glasses of purified water combined with lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne pepper daily, according to The Master Cleanse website. Since the transition to a purely liquid diet can be difficult for the body, proponents of the Master Cleanse offer several tips to ease the process. Before beginning any detoxification program or diet, check with your physician.
Ease In
The body and mind are better prepared to endure the Master Cleanse when you ease into the all-liquid diet portion of the cleanse, according to the Master Cleanse website. To ease in to the Master Cleanse, set aside three days. On the first day, each only "living foods," like fruits and vegetables, and eliminate meat and dairy. On the second day, use the vegetables and fruits to make smoothies, soups and broths, and do not eat any solid foods. On the third day, prepare at least two liters of freshly squeezed orange juice and do not drink any other vegetable or fruit juices or eat solid foods. You are then ready to begin the Master Cleanse.
Use Fresh Lemons
Fresh lemons, freshly squeezed each morning for their juice, are the best way to use lemon juice in the Master Cleanse Diet, according to the Master Cleanse website. Freshly-squeezed lemon juice contains all the nutrients and enzymes found in the whole lemon, but these nutrients degrade over time the longer the lemon juice sits. For best results, keep your lemons in a bowl on the counter top or in a cupboard. The cold inside a refrigerator may slow down the natural enzyme reactions inside the lemon, weakening its effectiveness in the Master Cleanse.
Induce Bowel Movements
Inducing bowel movements during the Master Cleanse is necessary for removing toxins from your system, according to the Master Cleanse website. Since you are not eating fiber-containing foods, however, your body may not move its own bowels naturally while you are on the Master Cleanse diet. You can help it do so by using an over-the-counter laxative or by drinking a large glass of salt water. According to the Master Cleanse website, you should aim for at least one bowel movement every day you are on the Master Cleanse Diet. Keep in mind, however, that overuse of laxatives may cause your body to become dependent on them, even when you transition back to solid food.
