Wearing a pedometer while walking or running allows you to track the distance covered during the workout and number of steps taken. Some people wear a pedometer to track their total steps taken each day while others wear the device only for workout sessions. Pedometers are approximately 2 inches in size and clip to a belt or the waistband of your pants so others are not aware you are wearing it.

Step 1

Measure the length of your walking or running stride for use with the pedometer. Mark a chalk line on the pavement and step approximately three to four paces behind the line.

Step 2

Walk, jog or run toward the chalk line using your standard pace. Starting to count 10 paces after your foot steps over the line. Stop and mark the toe point of the front foot at the end of 10 paces.

Step 3

Calculate your length of stride by marking a starting line on the pavement. Walk three to four lengths behind the line to start. Walk or run toward the starting line using the pace your keep during your fitness routine and begin counting 10 paces once your foot crosses over the marked starting line.

Step 4

Set the pedometer to either miles or kilometers, depending on your preference, by pressing "Mode" until the display shows "Step". Change the setting to miles or kilometers by pressing the "Mode" button until the display shows your preference.

Step 5

Input your calculated stride measurement by pressing the "Mode" button until the display shows "Distance." Press the "Set" button until the screen flashes. Press the "Reset" button to adjust the default or current stride. Wait for the display screen to exit once the length displays.

Step 6

Set or change the pedometer clock by pressing "Mode" until you reach the clock setting. Press "Set" until the screen flashes and push "Reset" to adjust the hour. Push "Set" to move to the minutes and press "Reset" to adjust. Press "Set" to move past the minutes and save the changes.

Step 7

Add your weight by pushing "Mode" until the calorie counter displays. Press "Set" and add your current weight. Wait for the display to exit to save the changes.

Step 8

Start the pedometer by pressing "Reset" to clear previous data and begin your walking or running. Press "Mode" to review the exercise data once finished. Pressing "Mode" during the workout allows you to view your status.
