Keeping your hair nourished and in top shape will help you grow longer, healthier hair. Having moisturized, conditioned hair and a healthy scalp will give your hair the best chance it has at growing faster and longer. While you can purchase many types of commercially prepared hair care products to help grow your hair, you can also use many common household ingredients and inexpensive products to make your own hair growth treatments and conditioners at home.

Rosemary Scalp Treatment

Rosemary has been used for centuries in many types of traditional herbal medicines for its healing and restorative properties. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, rosemary may also help to stimulate hair growth. In her book, "Natural Beauty at Home," natural beauty specialist Janice Cox suggests a combination of two tablespoons of fresh rosemary and 1/2 cup of olive oil to prepare a homemade hair growth treatment. Massaging this homemade treatment into your scalp can help to promote new hair growth by stimulating your scalp and your hair follicles.

Homemade Hair Packs

Homemade hair packs act as deep moisturizing treatments, helping to keep your hair in top shape. Hair that is conditioned will appear to grow faster, as nourished and hydrated hair will not break off or split as easily. Using a hair pack will also help to repair any damage or breakage that you've caused through chemical processing or other treatments. Homemade hair packs contain natural ingredients with moisturizing and hydrating properties commonly found in most households, including mayonnaise, avocado and olive oil. According to author Cox, you can mix and match these ingredients to make your own natural hair pack. Wrapping your hair in plastic wrap after application helps the heat from your scalp open your hair follicles, providing deep conditioning and stimulating hair growth. Hair packs are generally applied after shampooing and left on the hair for 20 minutes before rinsing.

Hot Oil Treatments

Hot oil treatments can also help promote hair growth by keeping your hair supple, moisturized and conditioned. According to author Brigitte Mars in her book "Beauty by Nature," you can choose from a variety of natural oils when making a hot oil treatment. Some you might consider are coconut oil, which adds shine and nourishment, or olive oil, which contains essential hair nutrients that can heal your hair and leave it feeling soft and shiny. When making a hot oil treatment, a half cup of your chosen oil is generally sufficient, depending on your hair length. Heating the oil is generally easiest by warming it in the microwave until it's just warm to your touch. The oil is applied to the hair before shampooing.
