Getting your kayak to the water can be a challenge if your kayak is too large for the roof of your car or you are trying to carry more than two kayaks. A trailer can be the solution. Your options are to buy a purpose-built kayak trailer, modify an existing trailer to hold kayaks or build your own trailer.
Buy a Trailer
Specialty kayak trailers are available from a number of suppliers. Buying is the simplest and fastest option for most people, but with 2010 prices starting at $1,000, you could buy several used kayaks for the same price. These are professionally constructed and very lightweight, but kayak trailers are not versatile, as they do not have a deck and are limited to hauling only kayaks. Their 12-inch tires also limit highway speeds.
Convert a Trailer to Haul Kayaks
If you already have a trailer, you can construct a secure cradle to hold one or more kayaks. A pair of wooden A-frames bolted to the deck of your trailer forms a stable rack that will hold up to five kayaks. For even more capacity, you can build a box frame that can carry up to nine kayaks. If you do not already have a trailer, used boat trailers are typically very inexpensive, on the order of a few hundred dollars, and come with quality components.
Build a Trailer
With hand tools and a bit of building skill you can make your own trailer with parts available from trailer suppliers. Even if you are not a welder, you can bolt together a frame out of inexpensive square steel tubing and construct a rack to hold your kayak. You may also choose to buy a trailer kit that you assemble yourself, and then add your kayak rack. Further consideration should be given to where you will store your trailer. Some trailer designs fold to conserve space when not in use. If you have a garage or storage space, you can keep your kayak ready to go at a moment's notice.
