A manual treadmill is an economical option for an in-home fitness machine. Because it doesn't have a motor, a manual treadmill is lighter, less expensive and smaller than a motorized treadmill. The walking belt does not move automatically; it only moves under the power of your walking or running stride. Because there are fewer moving parts, a manual treadmill generally requires less maintenance than a motorized treadmill. However, you will need to lubricate the walking deck regularly. NordicTrack recommends lubricating the deck after every 12 to 15 hours of use.

Step 1

Purchase the proper lubricant for your treadmill. Newer treadmills require silicone lubricant. Older manual treadmills may use paraffin lubricant. Consult your owner's manual or contact your treadmill manufacturer for the recommended lubricant.

Step 2

Lubricate the walking deck. Lift the middle of the walking belt on one side of the treadmill. Reach under the belt and apply half the tube of lubricant along the length of the deck. Repeat on the other side of the treadmill. Lubrication kits may be designed for a single application. Follow the directions for the lubricant recommended by your treadmill manufacturer.

Step 3

Spread the lubricant. Walk on the treadmill for a few minutes to distribute the lubricant.
