Cellulite is a lumpy collection of fat in a centralized area that pushes against the connective tissue of your skin. The lumps cause the skin to dimple, often resembling cottage cheese. Cellulite is common on women in the thigh and buttocks area, and according to the Mayo Clinic, most women have cellulite somewhere on their bodies. Cellulite occurs when fat levels get too high in a particular area; thus, the most effective way to eliminate cellulite is to lose body fat.
Step 1
Balance your diet. According to United States Department of Agriculture guidelines, active adults require at least 2,200 calories per day to maintain a healthy amount of energy. Split these calories into at least five meals per day, and snack between each meal. Eat at least five to six servings of fruits and vegetables per day to help ensure you spend your calories wisely.
Step 2
Build muscle in your legs. Exercise your legs twice per week, always leaving at least three days between sessions so your muscles can recover. Focus on building movements like squats, leg press, leg extensions and hamstring curls. Keep your movements slow and controlled. If you use free weights, make sure you use a spotter to keep your form proper and reduce your chance of getting injured.
Step 3
Run, or jog daily. Cardio can burn an incredible amount of calories, and if you keep your heart rate between 60 and 80 percent of its maximum, more than half of those calories will be from fat. Run or jog for at least three miles, a minimum of three times per week. According to Discovery Health, a 150-lb person jogging for 60 minutes burns through almost 500 calories.
Tips and Warnings
- Track every calorie you eat, and every calorie you burn. Create a spreadsheet that compares the two numbers every day. One pound of fat is equal to roughly 3,500 calories, according to the Mayo Clinic. See how long it takes you to burn 3,500 more calories than you eat. Set a goal for one week, see if you are successful, then make adjustments accordingly. Cellulite can be extremely stubborn, and some women who are within the recommended body weight for their height still have cellulite on their legs. Getting rid of cellulite can take a long time; however, with patience and persistence it will eventually burn off. When you set goals, keep them reasonable, and remember that losing fat is just a numbers game. The more calories you burn, the faster that cellulite will go away.
