Going away to college doesn't have to result in gaining the "freshman 15." The busy lifestyle of a college student means weight-management efforts need to be simple to follow and maintain. Getting into a flow with your weight-loss efforts allows you to keep up with your studies without increasing the numbers on the scale.
Eat All Meals
Skipping meals is tempting when you're going from class to class, meeting up with friends and working a part-time job. According to the American Council on Exercise, missing meals may result in overeating when you do finally sit down to a meal because you are so hungry. You may also be more likely to gain weight if you skip breakfast. Three healthy meals a day give you the energy you need to keep going with your busy college schedule while keep your weight down.
Carry Water
Water keeps your body hydrated and may reduce bloating due to water retention. By drinking water, you avoid high-sugar and high-calorie drinks, such as soda and rich, flavored coffee drinks. Purchase a reusable water bottle that you can carry in your bag all day long. Replenish your water supply at water fountains around campus to ensure you drink enough water throughout the day.
Limit Alcohol
Alcohol is often associated with college students. Teens Health warns that excessive alcohol consumption may cause significant weight gain. Like soda, alcohol contains empty calories that don't offer nutritional value. The average person could drink several hundred extra calories just by consuming a few alcoholic beverages. Consuming high-calorie foods while you drink increases your caloric intake even further. Limit your alcohol consumption to avoid the extra calories.
Get Enough Sleep
All-night study sessions may seem like the only way to pass a big test, but irregular sleep patterns and general lack of sleep may derail your weight loss efforts. According to the American Council on Exercise, you need quality sleep on a regular basis to avoid weight gain. A full night's sleep also allows you to feel more energized and better able to handle your busy schedule.
Find Exercise Inspiration
Exercise is a key component in losing weight, no matter what your age. Fitting exercise into your busy college schedule doesn't have to be challenging. Biking or walking to class, especially if you live off-campus, offers you a functional way to burn calories. Walk or jog around campus if you have a break between classes. Check out the campus exercise facilities, which you probably already pay for with your tuition and fees. An exercise partner also provides motivation to work out when you would rather sleep in.
