At-Home Remedies for Treating Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition that affects up to 7.5 million Americans, according to The National Institutes of Health. Skin commonly has patches of red flaky patches. Itching, discomfort and soreness are symptoms of the skin condition. Psoriasis is caused by an immune disorder where lymphocytes mistakenly attack healthy skin. A variety of home remedies can help relieve psoriasis.

Step 1

Identify and avoid triggers that cause an outbreak. Determine what triggers your outbreak by keeping a journal and documenting your daily activities. Study the journal to see if a pattern develops prior to an outbreak from occurring. Triggers can include stress, change in weather and even bug bites, according to The Mayo Clinic.

Step 2

Bathe daily for 15 minutes to soak skin and soften psoriasis patches. Add natural ingredients, such as 1 cup of oatmeal or ½ cup Epsom salt for additional relief. Include a few drops of essential oil for additional moisture and to counteract the dryness associated with a psoriasis outbreak.

Step 3

Apply essential oils, such as lavender or citrus, to the area. Petroleum jelly or even olive oil can be used to keep the skin lubricated. Massage moisturizer or oil onto the skin immediately after bathing, while skin is still wet.

Step 4

Relieve symptoms of psoriasis by soaking up sunshine. Sunbathe outdoors up to three times a week. Record how long you were in the sun and the results. Do not remain in the sun if your skin becomes burned; a 15- to 20-minute session outdoors is recommended.

Step 5

Get spot relief by using an icepack. Apply a bag of ice to the affected area for several minutes. Repeat as needed throughout the day.
