The answer to the age-old question "What causes grey hair?" depends on who you ask. Some people swear hair turns to this lighter color due to stress. Others will tell you it is a nutritional deficit in the diet. The truth is several things go into the formation of grey hair. Ultimately, it is the aging process that strips hair of its color. Hair coloring comes from melanin produced by the body. As you age, your body chemistry begins to change and grey strands start to push through. There is no scientifically proven way to stop your hair color from changing. As you age, grey hair is a fact of life. However, some natural approaches may help slow the process down or change your color back to its younger state temporarily.

Step 1

Mash fresh amla, also known as Indian Gooseberry, in a bowl until it becomes a paste. Amla is a fruit produced by the Amalaki tree. If you can not find the fresh berries, purchase amla tablets from the local health food store. Crush the tablets with a hammer or heavy tool. Mix just enough water with the crushed pills to create a paste.

Step 2

Dip your fingers into the paste and massage it into your scalp. It is not necessary to saturate hair strand with the compound, but cover the scalp completely.

Step 3

Leave the paste on the scalp for a few minutes and then wash it out with warm water. Repeat this process daily until you see results, then repeat weekly.

Step 4

Mix 1/2 cup to one cup of coconut oil with the juice from half a lemon as an alternative to using amla paste. Massage the oil into your scalp and work it down the hair shafts. Keep the compound in for 15 minutes then wash and condition your hair normally. Repeat application daily or one or twice a week if hair is oily.

Step 5

Monitor your diet and activity levels. One way to keep your hair healthy is to keep your body healthy. Stick to a low-fat diet and exercise daily, even if this means just taking a walk each day. Talk to your doctor about vitamin supplements. There is some indication that a dietary supplement may improve hair color, growth and texture. Look for a multivitamin with zinc, folic acid and biotin.
