Fine hair doesn't have to be a sentence to live with dreary, shapeless styles. Many products and hairstyles can make fine hair look thicker and more manageable. With the right kind of techniques, those with fine hair can add volume and make hair appear to have more shape and body.
Short
If you have fine hair, try shorter cuts to eliminate the frustration that comes with trying to add fullness to thin hair weighed down by length. Hairstyles cut close to the head are best for people with sparse hair. A classic bob works well for fine hair and can be flipped up or under for shape. Although a blunt bob can be easy to maintain and seem to provide a polished look, fine hair that's cut bluntly can hang limply when not at its best. Longer layers in the back of a bob can add fullness; too many layers can thin the hair even more than it is. Short hairstyles with textured bangs are always in style, and hair that's tapered longer in the front provides an illusion of fullness.
Medium
The ends of a medium cut should be trimmed regularly to prevent flyaway wisps. Layers cut around the face can help to frame a round face and make it look slimmer. It's important to use conditioner with a medium or long cut. Add mousse to the roots before blow-drying to add volume to the medium-length style. Coloring also can make hair look fuller when highlights are focused around the face. A body perm can be a great way to add fullness and waves to thin, limp hair. A root perm works well with medium-length thin hair and gives the entire style a lift.
Long
For those who prefer long hair, disconnected layers on the top of the head can provide a fuller look and the appearance of more body. Blunt-cut bangs, paired with choppy layers, can give a long hairstyle attitude and fullness. Bangs should be kept on the long side to give them enough weight to stay in place. Blow-dry hair on an upside-down head to give the long tresses more volume. Bend at the waist and blow hair out from the roots that have been touched with mousse or volumizer. Tease the roots with a comb before standing up and lightly combing the outer layers of the style.
