Vegetarians are often characterized by the foods they do eat, and not the foods that are eliminated from their diets. Adaptations are regularly formed, sometimes individually, but common vegetarian diets include: raw vegetarian, vegan, pescetarian, semi-vegetarian, while the most common is ovo-lacto vegetarian.

Foods Eliminated From an Ovo-lacto Vegetarian Diet

Ovo-lacto vegetarians do not eat any animal flesh. This includes, but is not limited to, beef, pork, poultry, and fish.

Eggs

The "ovo" portion of the title comes from the Latin word for egg. While ovo-lacto vegetarians abstain from the poultry flesh, they will consume products produced by animals, such as eggs.

Milk

Lacto comes from the Latin word for dairy. While ovo-lacto vegetarians don't eat the animals themselves they will eat and drink the milk of the animals and any products that come from the milk like cheese, yogurt and ice cream.

Other Foods Eaten by Ovo-lacto Vegetarians

In addition to eggs and dairy products, ovo-lacto vegetarians also consume fruits, vegetables, grains, beans and nuts. Eating a balanced variety of foods allows ovo-lacto vegetarians to get all of the nutrients required to function at optimal health.
