Tea is enjoyed as a beverage and for medicinal purposes in Chinese culture. According to the University of Maryland, Chinese green tea has shown promise in research examining its effects on metabolism. In addition, a 1999 study by the University of Geneva found that green tea has thermogenic properties and increases the oxidation of fat in the body. Given these results and the fact that green tea has few, if any, side effects, incorporating it into a healthy program of diet and exercise may help you lose weight.

Step 1

Drink at least three cups of green tea daily. Green tea is rich in polyphenols, substances that occur naturally in plants. These substances, found in large amounts in Chinese green tea, are the source of the tea's thermogenic qualities. Thermogenesis is the increase in metabolism, which causes a subtle rise in body temperature, increasing your ability to shed weight. Drinking green Chinese tea every day can keep your metabolism going strong, helping you lose weight.

Step 2

Place five bags of Chinese green tea in a quart of hot water and allow to steep for ten minutes. Add 2 tbsp. of honey, stir well and put in a pitcher in the fridge. Bring a portable bottle of this iced Chinese green tea with you and go for a half-hour walk every day. Chinese green tea contains moderate amounts of caffeine, which provides increased energy for exercise. Polyphenols in the tea also maintain your immunity, helping you stay healthy while you lose weight.

Step 3

Take a green tea extract supplement, available at your local health-food store. Green tea supplements are highly concentrated versions of Chinese tea that can be more convenient to use when actual tea isn't available. Like the tea, the extract contains moderate amounts of caffeine, which can provide you with energy and increased alertness.

Step 4

Freeze brewed, lightly sweetened Chinese tea in ice cube trays. Put six to eight of the cubes in a blender and blend until smooth. Add a drop of peppermint extract and blend it in the ice. Store in the freezer in individual containers and enjoy a Chinese tea sorbet after dinner or as a snack. This no-fat, low-sugar treat will fill your stomach and help to increase your body's fat-burning abilities, with very few calories.
