Cholesterol exists naturally within the body. We also ingest cholesterol-containing foods. The body utilizes cholesterol to make bile acids for digestion and various other functions, but abnormal cholesterol levels can lead to health problems. Blood tests measure the levels of HDL, or high-density cholesterol, and LDL, or low-density cholesterol, in your bloodstream. The American Heart Association recommends all adults ages 20 and older undergo cholesterol testing at least every five years. Individuals with certain risk factors require more frequent testing. Consult your health care provider to find out what testing schedule best suits you.

Step 1

Talk to your health care provider. Finding out your HDL and LDL cholesterol levels begins with scheduling an appointment to have your blood drawn. Ask for any pretest instructions, such as fasting or medication adjustment. Do not fast or stop medication without consulting your health care provider.

Step 2

Discuss the results of your cholesterol test with your health care provider. Some health care providers prefer to go over results in their office, while others give results on the phone. Make an appointment to see your health care provider to address any concerns or if treatment is needed.

Step 3

Consult your health care provider for specific recommendations to improve your cholesterol numbers or to maintain healthy cholesterol levels. Follow the instructions your health care provider gives you and follow up as needed.

Tips and Warnings

  • Ask your health care provider for a copy of your cholesterol test results. Maintaining a file of your test results helps keep you informed and allows you to provide others involved in your health care with copies of your lab work.
  • Never adjust medications or attempt to treat any medical condition without the supervision of your health care provider.
