Taking care of your hair may increase your chances of keeping your hair. The University of Maryland Medical Center includes "improper hair cosmetic use/improper hair care" in a list of 11 possible causes for hair loss in men. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services maintains a website on health and safety of household products, including men's hair products. Safe and effective hair care involves avoiding unnecessary chemicals and conditions that stress the scalp and dry out the hair. Selecting natural products not only helps the environment, it helps you reduce the chemicals you absorb through your skin.

Step 1

Shampoo with a product suited to your hair type. Shampoo formulated for normal hair works well for most men. Products designed for oily hair help keep hair from looking greasy if your hair tends to get oil. Choose a dry-hair formula for extra moisturizing if you have dry hair.

Step 2

Shampoo your hair with warm water. Hot water strips oils that protect your hair and scalp.

Step 3

Apply conditioner. These also come designed for your hair type. Hair-thickening conditioners leave a coating on the hair to help fine or thinning hair appear thicker.

Step 4

Give your hair a deep-conditioning treatment at least twice a month. For dry hair, apply a deep-conditioner once a week. Dry hair benefits from weekly deep conditioning. Mix equal parts jojoba and coconut oil for a natural plant-based conditioner. Leave the conditioner on your hair for 10 minutes then rinse it out.

Step 5

Apply a styling product in the smallest quantity necessary to do the job. A dab of gel or pomade the size of a quarter will provide enough hold for short hair without creating the stiff, helmet-head look. Too much styling product makes hair look unwashed.

Step 6

Get a haircut regularly. An unkempt cut undermines your whole look, and a man who looks as though he doesn't care for himself doesn't inspire confidence. Find a barber or stylist that understands your style and gives a cut you like.

Tips and Warnings

  • It's normal to lose 50 to 100 hairs a day. Consult your doctor if you're concerned about excessive hair loss. Some medical conditions and medication side effects result in hair loss. Choose unscented or low-scent products. Heavily scented hair products create a scent combat zone with your antiperspirant, shaving products and any other scented products you wear. Keeping your scent level low shows consideration for others. You don't have to shampoo daily unless you have unusually oily hair or need to clean soiling, odor or chemicals from your hair from your job or recreational activities.
  • Beware of any products that promise to stop hair loss or grow hair without any clinical evidence to back up the claims.
