Bach flowers are a series of 38 plants that can be combined in different ways to address emotional problems. The system was developed by Edward Bach at the beginning of the 20th century but it wasn't until 1934 that the first Bach Center was opened and the flowers gained more mainstream recognition. One Bach flower combination is Rescue Remedy, used to treat stress and shock.

General Information

Rescue Remedy is a natural herbal remedy made of the combination of five flowers: clematis, star of Bethlehem, cherry plum, rock rose and impatiens. Rescue Remedy is produced by Bach Flowers and sold in the forms of drops or spray. Each of the flowers in the mix addresses a particular issue. For example, clematis helps ground you and brings alertness and clarity, while star of Bethlehem helps treat shock. Other products, such as creams, gels and pastilles, are available to treat external trauma or to chew on to reduce overall stress.

How to Use

Dosage varies depending on age, whether you're pregnant or if you're using it on animals. Simply place anywhere between four and 10 drops under the tongue or mix with water to drink or to give your pets. Repeat four times a day or as needed. It's best to take Rescue Remedy on an empty stomach and at least 30 minutes before a meal.

General Safety

No side effects have been reported from the use of Rescue Remedy, although no official trails or studies have been conducted either. According to Bach Flowers' official website, the mix is safe for everybody to use. Feel Bach, a website that explores the many uses of Bach Flowers, says that Rescue Remedy can be safely used even if you're taking prescription medication. However, you should always consult with your doctor to confirm this. You can't overdose on Rescue Remedy.

Children and Pregnant Women

Rescue Remedy is available in an alcohol-free formula that is safe for both pregnant women and children. The official Bach Flowers website points out that Rescue Remedy can help make labor less stressful and traumatic for women. It can also be used to treat children's tantrum or anxiety, as well as to reduce their stress when sleeping somewhere new or on their first day of school.

Use in Pets

Bach Rescue Remedy can be safely used on dogs and cats, according to Pet Place. The original formulation of Rescue Remedy was made with 27 percent alcohol, but Bach Flowers now sells an alcohol-free formulation that is safe to use in pets. Rescue Remedy has an immediate calming effect.
