Originally used for hunting and battle, traditional archery bows have evolved into a recreational activity that teaches self-control and discipline. Traditional archery bows--longbows and recurve bows--use raw materials to propel the arrow to the target. The bow string on traditional bows is designed to provide strength, abrasion resistance and resist water.

History

The first bow strings were made from hemp, silk or animal parts twisted together. Coatings such as beeswax were used to make the strings waterproof. As technology evolved and new materials were discovered, traditional bow strings were made from lightweight, durable synthetic fabrics and can have a specialized string wax applied for weather resistance.

Types

Traditional bows require specialized bow strings based on the type of bow--recurve bow or longbow. Recurve bows are produced under tension and then finished 4 inches shorter than the specified length. Longbow strings are finished at only 3 inches shorter than the specified bow length with smaller loops to accommodate the narrow width of the limbs. Other types of traditional bow strings include endless loop bowstrings that feature overserved loops and flemish twist bowstrings that don't require loop serving.

Measurements

To perform properly, traditional bow strings must be the proper length. According to the Archery Trade Association, commercial traditional bow strings are listed as the length of the bow. For example, a 60-inch bow axle-to-axle will require a 60-inch bow string. This measurement is taken from the string groove found on the curve of both limbs and is not directly tip-to-tip.

Features

Technology and new materials have allowed traditional bow strings to be offered in multiple colors for personalization. Common colors include white, black, red, blue and tan. The number of strands--number of strings twisted together to make the string--is dependent on the draw weight of the bow. For traditional bows less than 40 lbs. of draw require a 10-strand string. A 12-strand string is required for 40 to 45 lbs.; 14-strand for 45 to 55 lbs; and 16-strand for bows more than 55 lbs. A hunting weight bow may require an 18-strand bow.

Considerations

Traditional bow strings will eventually stretch over time and should be changed periodically. Twisting the bow string can change the overall length and draw weight of the bow string and could potentially prolong the life of the bow string. Twisting can also improve performance and overall arrow flight.
