A cold sore, also known as a fever blister, is a common condition that is caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1 and results in a blister on the lip area. According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), the first signs of a cold sore include tingling, itching or pain, and while these sores typically appear on the lip, occasionally they may appear inside the mouth or on the nostrils, chin and even the fingers. They may last for a period of seven to 10 days, and though you cannot cure or prevent cold sores, you can reduce their frequency and limit their duration, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Ointments
According to the Mayo Clinic, ointments such as lidocaine and Zilactin (benzyl alcohol) can be purchased over-the-counter and may ease discomfort.
Antiviral Medications
According to the AAD, oral antiviral medications like acyclovir, famciclovir or valacyclovir have been developed to treat herpes infections. These medications can be used to regularly to suppress or treat outbreaks, and are available by prescription. In addition, antiviral medications may be effective at decreasing pain.
Alternative Remedies/Prevention
According to the Mayo Clinic, certain home-care methods can help relieve the pain of cold sores and may even reduce their occurrence. Apply a cold or hot compress to the area to relieve pain. Avoid picking or poking at the blister, as this may increase healing time. Wearing sunscreen and avoiding triggers like over-exposure to sunlight and lack of sleep, which may lead to cold sores. In addition, because cold sores are contagious, sharing utensils, cosmetics and towels with an infected individual may cause you to become infected.
