The dark fleshy tissue that appears from an acne scar is the body's way of healing the damage, as it renews collagen fibers and blood vessels. Acne scars can either be raised, depressed or a combination of the two. Ice pick and boxcar scars have an indentation of shapes that they leave in the skin. Rolling scars create a wavy shape to the flesh---as a series of depressions and growths form.
Step 1
Dab the cosmetic pad in a dish of rose water and cleanse the scarred area. Rose water is said to help stimulate blood vessels and circulation, notes Buzzle, and so will help with the repairing of the scars. Its antibacterial qualities will cleanse the surface area of dirt and oil.
Step 2
Steam your face over a bowl of hot water for several minutes to help open the pore and hair follicles.
Step 3
Puree fresh pineapple. Rub the pulp---a lumpy consistency---on the scars. The ascorbic acid content will help fade the dark blemishes, while the vitamin C will seep into the pores and help the collagen in rebuilding tissues.
Step 4
Form a exfoliating paste using 1 tsp. of baking soda and 2 tsp. of water. Mix together until it forms a pliable concentration and then rub into the acne scars for at least a minute before rinsing. This will provide a home microdermabrasion treatment, using the baking soda's granules to erode away at the scarred upper layers of skin and reveal new skin beneath.
Step 5
Moisturize with a product that contains a high SPF.
Tips and Warnings
- Tea tree oil or lemon juice can be used instead of rose water for cleansing. Mixes of honey and oatmeal or sandalwood powder and rose water can be used as exfoliates instead of pineapple. Honey can be used as a face mask singularly or combined with oatmeal. The SPF moisturizer is recommended if lemon juice is used. Lemon makes the skin more photo sensitive when applied topically. Olive oil can be used as a natural moisturizer instead.
- Applying home remedies which have acidic or exfoliating components to them can cause skin irritation. It is always recommended to speak with a specialist before starting treatment to discuss options. There is little medical evidence to support the claims of home remedies. A sufferer of mild acne scarring has the option of using over-the-counter acne products whereas for more severe cases---whether physical or mental---there are prescription drugs and clinical treatments.
