Microdermabrasion kits are available at most cosmetic retailers. The contents of the kits vary from actual microdermabrasion electronic devices to chemical scrubs massaged onto the skin. The effects vary, depending on the procedure used, chemicals the skin is exposed to and the length of treatment. Effective microdermabrasion commonly takes several weeks to perform. The procedures are noninvasive and only affect the outer portion of the skin.
Smooth Texture
Microdermabrasion removes old, dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. The skin's texture becomes smooth and increasingly soft. The skin will have a more vibrant glow. Blackheads and whiteheads will begin to diminish as treatment progresses.
Wrinkle Reduction
Using a microdermabrasion kit will reduce or diminish fine lines and wrinkles. Crow's feet, fine horizontal lines near the outer corners of the eyes, may begin to disappear. Other areas prone to wrinkles, such as between the eyes and the corners of the mouth, will have a reduction in fine lines.
Diminishing Age Spots and Scars
Age spots, scars and acne blemishes may slowly begin to fade after several treatments of microdermabrasion. Age spots are areas found on the skin, often circular in shape that have increased pigmentation. Age spots are often brown, black or grey in color. The spots are caused by sun damage, and are often seen on the face and hands.
Sunburn Risk
Because the skin's outermost layers has been manipulated, there is a higher risk for burns. Apply an SPF of 30 before going outdoors. Wear a wide-brimmed hat to protect your face from overexposure to UV rays. Avoid tanning beds because extreme burns may result.
Skin Sensitivy
Your skin may appear pink or red immediately after the treatment. Your skin may feel dry and have dead flakes present. Use a moisturizer immediately after a microderm treatment to lock in skin's moisture. Though sensitive, skin should never hurt or feel painful.
