According to a 2008 report by the U.S. Census Bureau, just over 8 percent of married-couple families with children younger than 18 are in poverty. By comparison, 38.9 percent of single mothers' incomes fall below the poverty level. Since they also bear the burden of caring for their children alone, gaining additional employment to earn more money can be a hardship. Thinking creatively can help a single mom earn and save more money.
Save on Food
A 2008 report by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that Americans spend about 10 percent of their incomes on food, at home and away from home. The good news is that this number can easily be lowered, which means more money in your pocket. Stop buying fast food, eating at restaurants or purchasing convenience store snacks. Pack your lunch every day as well as your children's, unless it is more economical for them to buy a school lunch. Brew your coffee at home instead of picking one up on the way to work. Keep nonperishable snacks such as granola bars and crackers in the car for those times when your kids are "starving" and you won't be home for a while. Cook in bulk on your days off and store meals in the freezer or prepare dishes in a slow cooker for easy weeknight dinners.
Lower Any Bills Possible
Many monthly bills are set expenses, such as car payments or rent. Many other bills, however, can be reduced, giving you more income with which to work. Reduce the amount of water, electricity and gas you use to lower utility bills each month. Take shorter showers, swap standard light bulbs for compact fluorescent ones and put on a sweater instead of cranking up the heat. You may be able to lessen insurance payments by shopping around with different agencies. Likewise, if your account is in good standing you may be able to lower interest rates on credit cards by calling your bank or switching to another one. If you always use your cell phone, consider disconnecting your land line. Use the money you save to pay off debts, including credit cards and student loans, to free up even more income.
Extra Income at Home
If taking on an additional job is not feasible, you can find ways to make extra money at home or by bringing your children with you. Take on an early-morning paper route. You can bundle the kids up and bring them along in the car. Provide child care, laundry services, tutoring, pet sitting or other services in the comfort of your home. If you have excellent clerical skills, you might find a position as a virtual assistant. If you are known for gourmet cooking, offer one-on-one classes in your kitchen. Consider the skills you have and look for a way to profit from them without having to leave your children.
