Olive oil is a well-known, widely-available ingredient, and if you use it as a pre-shampoo treatment, it will immediately improve the condition of your hair. Organic olive oil is a high-quality choice for a hair treatment. It's available online and in specialty stores, and it may have a higher price than its non-organic counterpart.
What Organic Means
If the label on a bottle of olive oil says the oil is "organic," that means the oil comes from an orchard in which the grower used no chemicals or pesticides on the trees and no environmentally-harmful methods of olive harvesting or oil extraction. Organic production methods preserve the vitamins and antioxidants in the olive oil, so your hair will reap a greater physical benefit from an organic oil than a non-organic one.
Effects on Hair
An organic olive oil treatment will leave your hair softer, easier to manage and less prone to breakage. It will also feel thicker and smoother. The increased smoothness will make it reflect more light, leaving it shinier.
Applying the Treatment
You'll start with dry, combed hair. Apply organic olive oil to your scalp with your fingers, massaging as you go, then coat your hair from roots to ends with the oil. Depending on how long your hair is, you'll use about 1/4 to 1/2 cup of the oil. Cover your hair with a plastic bag or shower cap, leave on for 30 minutes, then shampoo and condition your hair as usual. You might need to lather your shampoo an extra time to make sure you remove all the oil.
Variations
You can heat the oil gently before you begin--start with 10-second increments in your microwave and test the temperature on the inside of your wrist each time to avoid getting the oil too hot. You could also add one or two other ingredients to the oil, such as extracts or herbs.
Considerations
Wear old garments when you apply an organic olive oil hair treatment, as the oil will spatter or drip. Since higher cost may be a factor if you want to apply treatments on a regular basis, you might want to alternate organic olive oil with regular olive oil.
Warning
If you wash the oil from your hair in the shower, use caution, as the oil can make the shower floor slippery.
