You should consider three types of organic flea products if your pet has fleas. Whether you use one or all depends on the severity of the infestation as well as your pet's environment. For example, if you have a dog that goes outside in your yard, you will probably have to treat your yard, any indoor surfaces your dog comes into contact with and the dog itself. Even if you have an indoor cat, you may want to treat your yard if you spend a lot of time out there, as you may be bringing fleas in with you.
Treatment for Outdoors
According to Dr. Will Falconer, the best way to treat fleas in an outdoor environment is to use nematodes, which are tiny worms that eat the larvae of fleas, as flea larvae account for about 35 percent of all fleas. Two brand name products are Flea Control Nematodes and ANTidote, which also kills ants.
Treatments for Indoors
If you have rugs in your house, you are best off using boric acid as a flea treatment to kill flea larvae and eggs by removing their waxy coats. Boric acid stays in the carpet, even after vacuuming, due to its being a fine powder, and is safe for pets and humans. One brand name product is Fleago Natural Flea Control for Dogs and Cats. If you have hardwood floors, you should Nylar, a flea growth regulator, which prevents eggs from hatching and larvae from molting.
Treatment for Pets
Dr. Falconer says that a good flea comb is your best offense against fleas that are infesting your pets. In addition, bathing a pet in anything that lathers will kills fleas, although the products may also dry out the pet's skin. If you are bathing a dog, you might want to add a few drops of essential oils, such as lavender to the soap. Do not use essential oils with cats, as cats are sensitive to them and may get sick.
