Overview

According to the Mayo Clinic, acne and skin blemishes primarily are the result of changing hormones, which is why they are most prevalent in teenagers. Anyone can get blemishes on the skin, however, and the persistent lesions can become part of an ongoing pattern of breakouts. Teenage and adult acne may take years to heal and can lead to permanent scarring. There are a number of steps that can be taken to mitigate acne and skin blemishes, including treatment and preventive care.

Step 1

Wash with a gentle cleanser and avoid touching the face, especially areas that are prone to breakouts. Wash the areas that are prone to acne no more than twice a day because over-washing can irritate sensitive skin. Shower or bathe after exercise to remove dirt that can clog pores.

Step 2

Use creams and gels that dry overactive oil glands in the skin. Doctors at the Mayo Clinic recommend looking for products that contain benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid as an active ingredient. Most anti-acne creams are available over the counter.

Step 3

Find oil-free, water-based skin products to keep excess oil from accumulating on the skin. Use powder foundations instead of heavy cream makeup, as they are less irritating.

Step 4

Clean off all makeup before going to bed because cosmetics clog the pores and tiny hair follicles. Keep makeup fresh and bacteria free by switching out old makeup regularly. Keep cosmetic brushes and applicators clean with regularly washing.

Step 5

Maintain clear skin all over by wearing loose-fitting clothing, especially in the heat. Heat and moisture become trapped in tight clothing and can irritate the skin. Avoid tight straps, helmets and sports equipment that can chafe skin and make it rough.

  • Follow a healthy diet to get clear skin while using the proper kinds of cleansers. Doctors at Integrative Dermatology report that a diet high in fresh fruit and vegetables, lean meats, antioxidants, fish and whole grains can help to promote clear skin. They also point out that dairy products can aggravate skin in some people with milk allergies.
  • Avoid the sun because the ultra-violent rays are one of the worst enemies of clear skin. The UV rays of the sun can break down the skin and cause premature aging and wrinkles as well as sunburns.
