Honey thick foods are simply foods that are the consistency of honey. It is usually consumed by individuals who have difficulty swallowing to prevent them from choking and aspiration. Other consistencies of liquids include nectar thick and pudding thick. Characteristically, the test for whether a food is honey thick is if it is able to drizzle from a cup or bowl.

Natural Honey Thick Foods

Foods are either naturally honey thick or commercially thickened with thickening agents. Examples of naturally honey thick foods include honey, yogurt without fruit or granola pieces, gravy, custard and thick sauces.

Chocolate Milk Shake

To easily make honey thick chocolate milk combine in a blender, 1 cup of prepared chocolate pudding, 1/3 cup milk, 4 tbsp baby rice cereal and blend. Those with diabetes should use reduced or sugar free pudding.

Thickening Directions

Foods can easily be honey thickened by using 1 1/2 tbsp. of commercial thickener per 1/2 cup of thin liquid. Once thickener is added to liquid it should be stirred continuously for at least 20 seconds. Before consumption, let the food sit for 2 minutes for the thickness to settle.
