While there is no such thing as spot reducing, according to the American Council on Exercise, there are foods that can help you lose belly fat. The best approach to losing unwanted fat around your stomach is to eat a healthy, balanced diet of lean proteins, complex carbohydrates and essential fatty acids. Avoiding processed and refined foods that are high in empty calories. Doing daily cardiovascular exercise, such as walking, jogging, dancing or swimming will help you drop unwanted fat quickly.

Flushing Fat Diets

Diets that promote flushing fat from your system claim that by eliminating toxins from your body, you will lose excess fat, specifically around your belly. These types of diets promote drinking only water, or water with pure cranberry, and avoiding high-calorie, sugary drinks such as sodas, juices, coffees and drinks with alcohol. Lean proteins, particularly eggs, fresh raw vegetables and fruits and flax seed are the staples on this diet. According to Ann Louise Gittleman, author of "The Fat Flush Plan," this diet will cleanse your system, stabilize your insulin level to reduce cravings and improve your digestive system for a flatter stomach within a few weeks.

MUFA Rich Diets

Diets that are high in monounsaturated fatty acids, MUFAs, can prevent and reduce your belly fat, according to the March 2007 "Journal of Diabetes Care." This type of diet encourages eating MUFAs such as dark chocolate, avocado, nuts, seeds, olives and oils with every meal. "Flat Belly Diet" author Liz Vaccariello suggests eating a small portion of MUFAs with every meal to see flat belly results with one week. Serving sizes should stay small to avoid excessive calories. Choose 1/4 cup of avocado, dark chocolate or seeds, 10 olives or nuts or 1 tbsp. of oil to eat with every meal or as a snack.

Eat Natural Foods

Diets that promote eating foods that are more in their natural state claim that you will improve your digestion, increase your energy level, raise your metabolism and improve your overall health, as well as achieve a flat stomach. These diets encourage eating lean proteins such as lean beaf, chicken, turkey and fish and complex carbohydrates such as whole grain breads, pastas and cereals, oatmeal, wild and brown rice and fresh fruits and vegetables. Essential fatty acids are key to maintaining good health and metabolism, according to "The Eat-Clean Diet" author Tosca Reno. Reno suggests not counting calories but eating every two to three hours in smaller quantities. Serving sizes should fit in the palm of your hand.
