The Effects of Seroquel

Seroquel is a brand name drug that contains quetiapine, which is an antipsychotic used to treat bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Because this drug affects the levels of chemicals in the brain, it can cause side effects ranging from mild to life threatening in severity. Understanding the effects of Seroquel can help people with mental disorders decide if Seroquel should be a part of their treatment plans.

Most Common

While Seroquel can cause a number of side effects, there are five side effects that occur most commonly with the drug. According to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, the most common side effects are dry mouth, indigestion, weight gain, constipation and drowsiness. People taking this drug should not operate heavy equipment or drive motor vehicles until they understand the full effects of Seroquel.

Less Common

Some side effects of Seroquel are less common but still possible. They include vision changes, decreased appetite, irregular or fast heartbeat, increased muscle tone, loss of energy and strength, abdominal pain, stuffy or runny nose, headache and increased sweating. If these side effects are persistent or bothersome, they should be reported to a medical professional.

Serious

Seek immediate medical attention if any of the most serious side effects of Seroquel are experienced. These side effects include fainting, fever, sore throat, muscle aches, chills, dizziness, lightheadedness, loss of balance, skin rash, arm or leg stiffness, shuffling walk, swelling of the limbs, difficulty breathing, slowed movements, difficulty swallowing or difficulty speaking.

Rare

Rare side effects of Seroquel include changes in the menstrual cycle, symptoms of underactive thyroid gland, unusual secretion of milk from the breasts in females, loss of appetite, weight gain, fatigue and dry, puffy skin. It is not necessary to seek medical attention for these side effects unless they are bothersome or persist after the initial adjustment period to the medication.

Allergic Reaction

Anyone with an allergy to quetiapine or any of its ingredients should not take Seroquel. If an allergic reaction occurs, seek emergency medical treatment. Signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction include difficulty breathing, hives, rash and swelling of the tongue, lips, face and hands. Treatment for an allergic reaction to Seroquel may involve the administration of an antihistamine or rescue allergy medication such as epinephrine.
