With the entire body engaged in a golf swing, players often seek for one key thought that will help them swing better and hit more consistent shots. A good, repeatable golf swing maintains the same path each time. Starting the club back on the wrong path can force the body to make corrections that sap power or put the club on its way to brushing the ball left or right instead of powerfully straight. One swing key is to concentrate on the right shoulder's movement in the backswing.

Step 1

Take the proper setup so the right shoulder can turn correctly. Bend slightly at the knees, keep your back relaxed and straight and bend to the ball at your waist, not with your back. You will rotate around and maintain this spine angle on the backswing and downswing until just after you've hit the ball.

Step 2

As you turn, rotate your torso while you maintain your spine angle. This spine angle will force your right shoulder to move back and up in the backswing. Practice swinging slowly to understand the feel. Practice the move with a driver and a midiron.

Step 3

Put a mirror behind you that faces the target line. When your hands reach the level of your chest in the backswing, check in the mirror that your shoulders and the club's shaft is on a parallel plane that matches the plane the shaft formed at address.

Step 4

Finish the backswing by moving the club head up. Keep the same plane in your shoulders by maintaining the spine angle. Practice this move slowly, which will also show if you are maintaining the proper balance.
