Learning to ride a bike is a major milestone in any child's life. It means more independence, more responsibility and, unfortunately, more ways to potentially get hurt. Because of this, it is important that parents and teachers begin talking about bicycle safety early. While children shouldn't be frightened, it is important to convey that bike safety should be taken very seriously. This can be done in a fun way, but make sure that your child is attentive and knows all the rules before she gets on a bike.

Step 1

Discuss the rules with your child. If you have decided she cannot leave the driveway or be out of sight while on her bicycle, tell her this.

Step 2

Talk about basic bike safety regularly. Discuss why helmets are so important, why bike riders need to stop at stop signs and how to safely cross the street.

Step 3

Read a children's book that talks about bicycle safety. Having pictures and a story line will make learning the rules more engaging for your child.

Step 4

Make up a bicycle safety song to a familiar tune. This is a fun way to help your child remember the rules.

Step 5

Model safe bicycle use for your child. Young children are known for repeating what their parents do, so if your child sees you put on your helmet every time you get on a bike, she will be more likely to do the same.

Things You'll Need

  • Child-size bicycle
  • Training wheels (optional)
  • Child's helmet
