The Internet offers unbounded sources of information, guidance and social interaction, but despite its many pros, it is not without its cons. The same technology that helps your children with homework and gives them access to a world of valuable knowledge also puts them at risk and leaves them "vulnerable to exploitation and harm by computer-sex offenders," according to the U.S Federal Bureau of Investigation, or FBI. Proactive parenting can keep children safe while also encouraging their innovation and learning.

Background

When the Internet first became available to the public, it seemed like a tool that could only make life better. However, as more people gathered and communicated in cyberspace, predators saw an opportunity for exploitation, especially those who prey on children. It's important to be aware of online child exploitation and the tactics used by computer-sex offenders so that you can keep your child safe.

Predator Profile

Internet predators don't fit a stereotype; therefore, there's no one profile that describes all computer-sex offenders. They range in age, social and economic status and ethnicity, and they include both males and females, according to the FBI. What they often have in common, however, are deviant urges, social and intimacy insufficiencies and weak coping skills, states the Center for Sex Offender Management, or CSOM. Like other psychopaths, also known as sociopaths, child predators have no empathy for their victims.

Most child predators justify their wrongdoings and believe they're above the law. Many are master manipulators who have developed skills in seduction, and they look for the most innocent or unsuspecting victims. "Some of these individuals gradually seduce their targets through the use of attention, affection, kindness, and even gifts," warns the FBI. Computer-sex offenders are typically very determined and aggressive, and they'll go to any length to prey on a child, including sending letters, encouraging phone contact and even sending airline tickets, says the FBI.

Computer Location and Security

Place home computers in common areas and open rooms where you can monitor your children's Internet activity. Check schools and libraries and inquire about the software used and other precautions taken to protect your children, recommends the FBI and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. Give babysitters and other care givers instructions about your children's computer usage and safety in and out of the home. Communicate with your children's friends' parents about Internet access and safety.

Limit Time and Activity

Set computer usage time limits for children. Also, set "hours of operation" for household computers so that children aren't tempted to stay up late and access the net. The FBI warns that most computer-sex offenders "spend their evenings on-line trying to locate and lure children or seeking pornography." However, keep in mind that kids are always at risk since predators access the Internet around the clock, according to the FBI.

Education and Rules

Some of the best strategies for ensuring your children's safety on the Internet include education and open conversation. Talk to your kids about the dangers of the Internet, and start with an honest discussion about the realities of victimization. Protect your children from computer-sex offenders also by setting rules for the types of information they can access and share on the Internet.

Software and Security

Computer-sex offenders are notorious for trying to make contact with children beyond the Internet, according to the FBI. Utilize caller ID and other security options available through your telephone service provider. Use computer security software to block hackers and other intruders from obtaining personal information. Purchase and load software designed to monitor and protect children.
