A high-fat diet increases the risk of several health problems including obesity, high cholesterol, heart disease and stroke. According to Gary Plotnick, a cardiologist at the University of Maryland Medical Center, the blood vessel function becomes impaired immediately after a fatty meal. The benefits of reducing fats in your diet are apparent. It can be difficult to avoid these fats, however, which are found in foods such as meat, dairy, eggs, junk food and packaged foods, so be proactive about eliminating fats from your body.

Step 1

Eliminate unhealthy fats such as saturated and trans fat from your diet; trying to eliminate them while still eating them is counterproductive.

Step 2

Eat more fiber from sources such as vegetables, fruits, seeds, nuts and whole grains as this nutrient is a potent detoxifier, explains Ann Louise Gittleman, author of "The Fast Track One-Day Detox Diet." Fiber improves digestion of fats and other foods and helps your body eliminate toxins and waste products more efficiently.

Step 3

Drink two cups of green tea with lemon each day as this beverage helps to increase oxidation or burning of brown fat, according to a 2000 study published in the "International Journal of Obesity." Let the tea steep for 3 to 5 minutes and drink it freshly brewed, advises the Harvard Women's Health Watch.

Step 4

Take milk thistle in tincture or capsule form. Milk thistle is rich in silymarin, which is a group of flavonoids, that improves the liver's ability to metabolize fats and remove detoxify the body.

Tips and Warnings

  • Do not completely eliminate fats from your diet. Eat small amounts of healthy oils or fat from sources such as salmon or flax seeds. If you drink grapefruit, eliminate it when you're trying to flush fats or detoxify in general. As Gittleman explains, grapefruit juice interferes with the detox process. Drink about eight 8-oz. glasses of filtered or purified water each day. It softens stools, which is especially important when you're eating more fiber, and promotes detoxification.
  • Do not take any supplements promoted for flushing fat without consulting your doctor. While supplements such as milk thistle can be effective in promoting fat metabolism and detoxification, they may also cause adverse reactions or interact with other supplements or medications.
