Youth basketball remains a great way for kids to get exercise while learning important social skills. Playing on a youth basketball team allows children to work together and learn vital sharing techniques. Youth basketball rules can be easily learned and cover how to dribble the ball down the court as well as acceptable shooting practices. Kid's playing procedures also take into account inappropriate contact with opposing players, known as fouls. Learning how to properly play helps kids to effectively participate in the game.

Step 1

Hold the basketball between your hands while standing behind the line under your teams basketball goal. Throw the ball to your teammate and then jog towards the opposing players basketball goal. Catch the ball as your teammate passes it in your direction. Drop the ball onto the basketball court.

Step 2

Use your dominant hand to push down on the ball as it bounces off of the court to dribble the ball. Place only one hand on top of the ball as you dribble to avoid a penalty known as a double dribble. Throw the ball to one of your open teammates standing near your opposing team's basketball goal.

Step 3

Run under the basketball goal as your teammate shoots the ball. Jump up to catch the ball---this is called a rebound---if your teammate's shot does not go through the net of the goal. Jog back to the opposing end of the court if your teammate had a successful shot. Watch the ball as the opposing team dribbles the ball in the direction of your team's basketball goal.

Step 4

Hold your hands up to attempt to block the ball as the opposing team passes the ball back and forth. Jump in front of the ball as one of the opposing players makes a pass. Catch the ball out of the air and dribble down the court towards the opposing team's basketball goal.

Step 5

Place your feet side by side and shoulder-width apart as you near the basketball goal. Hold the ball between your hands. Bend your knees and extend your arms towards the circular rim of the basketball goal. Release the ball and aim towards the square located in the middle of the flat backboard of the basketball goal.

Step 6

Hold your arms forward as the ball flies towards the goal to perform a technique known as the follow through. Jog under the basketball goal to attempt to a rebound if your shot did not successfully go through the net. Jog back to opposing side of the basketball court if you had a successful shot.
